Garage Door Cable Repair & Replacement

A frayed, snapped or displaced lift cable can leave a garage door unevenly supported. GarageCraft provides residential cable repair and replacement, with inspection of the lifting system before the door returns to use.

Before and after garage door cable and drum correction

What a cable problem can look like

A cable may have broken strands, appear loose beside the door or come off its drum. The door may hang lower on one side or stop moving normally. These are reasons to stop operating it, not instructions to pull the cable tight.

Describe what you already observed from a safe distance. A photograph can help explain the position, but it cannot establish the cause or show every damaged component.

How the cable and drum work together

On a torsion-spring system, lift cables connect the door to grooved drums on the shaft. The drums take up and pay out cable as the door moves. Spring counterbalance, cable routing and the rest of the door must work together for controlled movement.

A cable off its drum may be a symptom of another problem. Spring condition and balance, damaged hardware or a door that binds can affect the lifting system. Repositioning the cable alone may leave that problem unresolved.

Inspection before replacement

GarageCraft handles broken and frayed cable replacement and cable/drum problems. Related inspection may include springs, drums, bearings, the torsion tube, rollers, hinges, tracks, door balance and opener operation.

The findings determine what needs attention. A cable repair does not automatically include replacing all those parts. If rollers have left the track or the door is hanging at an angle, see our off-track repair service.

What professional cable service involves

  1. 01

    Assess the door’s position

Review the damage and lifting system before handling loaded components.

  2. 02

    Explain the repair

Identify the cable work and any related faults, then discuss the recommended scope.

  3. 03

    Repair and check operation

Carry out the agreed work using appropriate equipment, then check cable travel, balance and door operation.

Choosing the next step

If the cause is unclear, our general repair service can assess the whole door. For wear without an active failure, maintenance and inspection can help identify what needs attention. A damaged cable needs assessment before further use, rather than waiting for a routine visit.

Cable repair questions

Can I open the door with one broken cable?

Do not operate it. Uneven support can allow the door to shift or fall. Keep people and pets away and describe its position when you call.

Can a cable that came off the drum simply be put back?

The cause needs inspection first. Repositioning it without addressing a balance, drum or movement problem may leave the fault in place. Do not manipulate a loaded cable system yourself.

Does a frayed cable need attention if the door still works?

Yes. Visible broken strands indicate damage. Stop using the door and arrange assessment rather than relying on the remaining strands.

Does cable repair include new springs?

Not automatically. Springs and other related parts may be inspected, but replacement depends on their condition and the agreed work.

What should I tell GarageCraft when calling?

Share your town, whether the door is open, closed or crooked, and any cable damage visible from a safe position. Do not move the door to provide a demonstration.

Can I call outside normal hours?

Yes. GarageCraft offers 24/7 emergency garage door service. Call (586) 262-6252 to confirm availability and timing for your location.
